Recognizing the Signs

Does My Child Need Orthodontics?

Every child is different, but there are some common signs you can look for that may indicate that your child needs orthodontic treatment:

Late, early, or irregular loss of baby teeth

Difficulty chewing properly

Frequent mouth breathing

Regular biting of the cheek or the roof of the mouth

Oral habits like thumb or finger sucking

Irregular swallowing patterns

You may also notice that your child’s teeth don’t meet properly, or that they don’t meet at all. Their jaws and teeth may also look disproportionate to the rest of their face. If you recognize one or more of these signs, this could indicate that your child needs orthodontics.

What to Expect

Your First Orthodontic Appointment in wyomissing

At your first appointment at Molly Hottenstein Orthodontics, our Wyomissing orthodontist will begin with a comprehensive oral exam. She will examine your child’s teeth and bite, take images of their smile, and take x-rays to check their oral development and understand what orthodontic challenges may be present.

Doctor Molly recommends that kids come in for a check-up around age 7 or 8 to make sure everything is looking good. If everything looks great she usually sees patients back annually for a check-up. There is no charge for these observation check-ups.

Dr. Molly will discuss her findings with you and provide you with suggestions on how to proceed. She will develop a custom treatment plan for your child. If Dr. Molly suggests treatment, you may begin as early as that same day, or schedule an appointment at a future date.

The Best Age for Orthodontics

When Should My Child Get Braces?

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children begin being screened by an orthodontist at age 7. Even if they are not ready to begin treatment, Dr. Molly will be able to track their development and get an idea of what to expect in the future. In some cases, Dr. Molly may recommend early treatment. In others cases, the child may not be ready for braces until all of their adult teeth are erupted. Every child is different.

Early Orthodontic Treatment

What Is Phase 1 Orthodontics?

Phase 1 Orthodontics refers to orthodontic treatment that’s done between the ages of 6-9 years old, which is used to catch serious orthodontic issues early and encourage proper oral development. Sometimes early, interceptive treatment is needed to ensure proper oral development. Usually this is a skeletal, spacing, or aesthetic issue that should be addressed to avoid more involved orthodontic treatments in the future.
