How Do I Care For My Invisalign Trays?

Whether you’ve already gotten Invisalign in Wyomissing from Molly Hottenstein Orthodontics, or you’re just curious to learn more about the treatment process as you explore your options for smile correction, you may be wondering who to care for Invisalign trays properly.

In this blog, the team at Molly Hottenstein Orthodontics will take a look at a few steps you’ll need to take to care for your trays properly. Let’s get started.

1. Remove Your Trays & Rinse Them Whenever You Eat Or Drink (Except Water)

Chewing food while wearing your Invisalign aligners will warp and damage them, and it may also stain them, making them visible on your teeth. Drinking any beverage except water can also cause stains on your aligners, so make sure you never eat or drink while wearing your aligners. Take them out before doing so. They’re removable for a reason!

2. Brush Or Rinse Your Teeth After You Eat Or Drink

After you eat or drink, you should brush your teeth and floss, if possible. This will ensure there is no food debris that will interfere with your aligners, and also helps prevent the buildup of bacteria and plaque.

If it’s not possible for you to brush and floss after a meal, you should at least rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash to remove the bulk of food particles.

3. Keep Your Aligners In Their Carrying Case When You’re Not Wearing Them

Whenever your aligners are not in your mouth, they should be in their carrying case. Your carrying case protects your aligners from damage and from the environment, and ensures that you can keep track of your aligners. Misplacing or accidentally damaging an aligner can set your treatment back significantly, so make sure you keep them in their carrying case at all times.

4. Brush Your Invisalign Trays At Night When You Brush Your Teeth

You should brush your Invisalign trays at least once per day. Most patients choose to do this at night, before they put their aligners back in and go to sleep. You can use a non-abrasive toothpaste to do this, or a clear, non-scented, clean-rinsing soap. Brush your aligners thoroughly to remove food particles and bacteria, and rinse them thoroughly before putting them back into your mouth.

5. Handle Your Aligners Carefully & Don’t Drop Them

When you’re cleaning your aligners or taking them out to eat and drink, be careful. Your aligners are strong and durable, but are quite brittle and could crack, warp, or break if they’re dropped onto the floor or onto a hard porcelain sink.
