Is Smile Direct Club Safe?

If you’re not one of the lucky ones born with perfectly straight teeth, you may be looking at some solutions. Luckily, modern dentistry has many available!

But frequently going to the orthodontist to monitor your treatment might not be so appealing, especially for a busy schedule. It’s why at-home services such as Smile Direct Club are so appealing.

But before you order your own trays, read this article to find out if Smile Direct Club is safe or not.

How Does Smile Direct Club Work?

Smile Direct Club offers at-home teeth straightening kits for patients with mild misalignment issues. Patients can either go to one of their offices to get a scan of their teeth, although they can also order a mold at home to take an imprint of their teeth.

Based on the scan or imprint, Smile Direct Club will create a custom set of aligners and establish a treatment plan. They will tell you how often you need to wear the aligners and estimate how long the treatment will last.

Your progress is monitored, but not through in-person meetings. Smile Direct Club members will remotely connect with one of the company’s approved orthodontists for an online consultation.

Why This Approach Is Not for Everyone

It’s important to be cautious with Smile Direct Club, specifically because the treatment is not as closely supervised as going to an orthodontist.

Teeth don’t follow a strict “path” when wearing braces or aligners. Each patient is very different and if your treatment needs to be modified for a better outcome, only an orthodontist can catch that. Some might experience their teeth realign very soon after they get braces or aligners, while for others, their teeth may need more time.

With in-person meetings, you have an expert eye and guidance if you need to modify your treatment for the best results. It’s why people who wear braces or clear aligners have to routinely visit their orthodontist in Wyomissing, in many cases, these visits end up changing the treatment. Teeth straightening is most effective when it’s closely monitored by a professional.

What’s a Better Alternative?

Invisalign is one of the most popular treatments to realign teeth because it’s discreet and easy to manage. Unlike Smile Direct Club aligners, Invisalign treatment is closely supervised by your orthodontist. Additionally, the trays are made based on your exact measurements as the dentist will take a mold of your mouth.
