6 Reasons Your Child May Need Braces

Teenage years can be quite awkward. There are lots of physical and emotional changes. Kids are growing more independent and taking on more responsibilities. And there is a lot of social pressure to look and be a certain way. So if your teen may need braces, that can feel like the end of the world to them. But, it doesn't have to be that way.

At Molly Hottenstein Orthodontics, we have extensive experience in dealing with a wide array of pediatric dental issues. But, more than that, we know how to put ourselves in your teen's shoes, see things from their perspective, and help them understand why getting braces is actually a good thing for them.

If you suspect your child may need braces, contact us, and let's have a chat together with your teen.

How Do You Know Your Child Needs Braces

First and foremost, your child will be to come in for a consultation. That's because, there are instances when your child's teeth may seem straight, but there could be issues with their bite.

Some signs can show you when it’s time to take action and help your child grow into a healthy and beautiful smile.

  1. If you notice your child has difficulty biting and chewing this can be a sign of misaligned teeth.
  2. Grinding the teeth is also a sign of misalignment. This occurs especially during the night and if untreated it can lead to teeth damage and jaw issues.
  3. Thumb-sucking can also affect the way teeth grow as it pulls them forward, causing the lower teeth to crowd, at the same time.
  4. Jaw shifting or clicking indicates an abnormal alignment and needs to be addressed as well.
  5. Disproportionate jaw or teeth in relation to the rest of the face.
  6. Early, late, or irregular baby teeth loss. This can cause teeth to grow in misaligned.

What Are The Benefits of Braces?

Optimal oral health, improved digestion, jawbone conservation, improved speech, straight teeth, a beautiful smile, and a confidence boost are some of the major benefits braces can bring.

Of course, braces can sometimes feel like a major issue that brings a lot of social inconveniences. That's true for both children and adults. But, teens especially can feel self-conscious about themselves and even scared.

Because not getting braces can have such lasting effects, your child needs to understand the benefits they can bring, even from a social perspective.

Talk to your child about them, listen to their needs and concerns, and address them with the help of a professional.
